Miley Cyrus has explained her sex appeal lies in the fact that she never tries too hard.

The singer recently topped Maxim magazine’s Hot 100 list after shedding her good girl image with a radical make-over.

Last year, the former Disney actress overhauled her girl-next-door look with a bleached blonde crop and a rock-inspired new wardrobe.

The Hannah Montana starlet explained that her drastic new hair cut and colour have given her an attitude boost.

“I think just never trying too hard,” Miley explained to ET Online. “My favourite thing is I love having short hair. I love it being just all about being confident and giving face. I love that.”

Miley, who is engaged to fellow actor Liam Hemsworth, added that she felt honoured to have been voted the sexiest woman.

The 20-year-old, who maintains her slim and toned figure with regular Pilates sessions, beat the likes of Mila Kunis, Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna to the title.

The honour has previously been awarded to Hollywood bombshells including Jessica Alba and Katy Perry.

“It’s amazing! I said it in my article: I think it’s every girl’s dream to be able to say that they got number one in Maxim’s 100, and it’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so it’s just insane,” Miley gushed.

The stunning star suspects that her huge fan base had something to do with her winning the top spot.

“It’s really because of the fans,” she explained. “I would like to think it’s because I’m the most gorgeous woman in the world but it’s because of my fans, really. So, it’s awesome.”

Miley Cyrus thinks Rihanna should be at the top of Maxim’s 2013 Hot 100 list.

The 20-year-old singer – who is engaged to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth – has been crowned the magazine’s sexiest woman of the year but admitted if she had a choice, Rihanna, 25, would be number one.

She told HollywoodLife.com: ”I think Rihanna. She is so sexy!”

Miley, who leaked the results early via her Twitter page before the publication officially announced the results, admitted she was so excited about the accolade, she found it impossible to keep the secret.

She said: ”My first reaction was to go straight to Twitter but I had to keep my paws off my phone. I had to keep my thumbs from pressing send. I think I announced it four days earlier by accident, but it was all because I was so excited.”

Miley also posted an exclusive picture of herself from the magazine’s upcoming steamy spread, in which she is laying seductively on a beach in a gold swimsuit even though she recently claimed she was no longer interested in stripping down for photo-shoots.

She said: ”A star is someone who doesn’t have to take her clothes off to be sexy because you naturally have star power. Sex does sell, but you have to find a way that’s not just showing your tits. I don’t want to be a glorified model. They just walk on stage and it’s all about their clothes – or lack of clothes.”

When Miley Cyrus was on her European Tour, she rented a London apartment across the road from Harrods. She says it was haunted.

Over to Miley…

‘I was touring in Europe and I needed a home base. So if we were to go to Ireland I would just come right back. I used to have an apartment in London, right across the street from Harrods. I used to have a place right there, and it was really haunted and I had to move. That’s not a lie.

‘It was seriously so terrifying. It used to be an old bakery and they turned it into an apartment building, and I was having really crazy dreams and really scary things, and one night my little sister – it sounds crazy to tell you – but she was standing in the shower and all of a sudden I hear her scream. I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot but it was still… It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn’t turned it and it was burning her. She was really red.

‘Before I felt this, I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out. I was sitting there the next night and maybe I’m crazy, but I could have sworn I could see this little boy sitting there on the sink, kicking his feet.

‘My mom was getting mad that we were looking into it because she thought it was going to scare Noah [Miley's younger sister], so then my aunt – who we hadn’t told about this – comes in and she starts freaking out. She’s like, “I had no idea what happened but I left the apartment and I came back and all the doors and windows were open. I locked the apartment.” I’m like, “Tell my mom, she doesn’t believe that anything is happening in the apartment.”

‘So she told her and I’m like, “Mom, see – I’m not making this up.’ Three or four more things happened after that. I will never stay there ever again. Liam [Hemsworth, Miley's fiancé] had an experience, my mom had an experience, we all had these crazy experiences and it was terrifying.

‘So then when we started looking into it, we found out that this guy and his son – this guy who owned the bakery, it was one of these where the dad owns it and the dad owns it – and there was this older man that owned it and his son lived with him there, and I guess the wife died or something, she had gotten sick. So it was just the son and the dad that lived there in the bakery, and then the dad died and the son took over the bakery, and I thought I was seeing the son. I’m not even kidding.’

…So they all moved out to the Soho Hotel.

Miley Cyrus is fooling around in a grey onesie, pulling the animal head – a unicorn – over her face, blowing a kiss into her mobile phone camera, bouncing barefoot across the studio like a goofy kid.

Next, she’s another creature altogether,, slinky in a pink bejewelled Fausto Puglisi dress, cut out at the midriff and right up to here, a dirty rap track turned up loud as she shows off her mastery of the twerk – an extreme booty shake.

How many contradictions can be packed into one slight-framed 20-year-old? Just a few years ago, she played that clean-cut, all-American teenager, Hannah Montana, and wore a purity ring to publicly proclaim her virginity. Now she’s the punk in the spiky leather jacket, tough blonde crop and ever-growing collection of tattoos.

As she tentatively plays us tracks from her new album, she anxiously sneaks looks at our faces: do we like it? But by all modern fame indices, she is already a confirmed global superstar: she has 11 million Twitter followers, 25 million Facebook likes, nearly 325 million views on her YouTube channel and is worth a reported $120 million.

Miley is that most modern of phenomena, a living, breathing superbrand. She commands more marketing power b tapping 140 characters into her iPhone than a global corporation can generate in a multimillion-dollar TV ad campaign. A whole generation of girl-women who loved her sweet but spirited Disney alter-ego Hannah, the high-school kid with strong family values and a secret life as a pop star, hang on her every tweet.

Such power, but is she using it wisely? The tween fans that grew up with Hannah are finding their feet in a highly sexualised culture, in which the aesthetics of internet porn have leeched into mainstream fashion and music. On MTV, female artists not out yet of their teens performig in lingerie and leathers, their movies aping of a pole dancer’s XX-rated bump and grind. There message to girls is ‘forget talent – what counts is being hot and available’.. No wonder they are sexting topless pictures, pouting on Facebook, feeling pressure to service boys’ needs too young.

After she left Disney’s wholesome embrace, Miley Cyrus was no exception. Not yet 18 in the video for Who Owns My Heart, she writhes on a rumbled double bed in her underwear and in Can’t Be Tamed she’s a bondage-clag blackbird. Little surprise perhaps that she was voted in a 2011 AOL poll as the worst role model for teenage girls.

But then Miley was still growing up. Like any teenager, she was testing boundaries, trying on new identities for size. And her youthful misdemeanours – smoking a bong of the legal high salvia, a jokey lap-dance, aged 16, for a film producer, snogging her boyfriend in public, pole-dancing at the Teen Choice Awards – are captured forever online.

Her entire life has been obsessively documented – just to get to into the building today, she ran a phalanx of paparazzi obsessed with her allegedly on-off engagement with actor Liam Hemsworth, every bulging lens focused on the third finger, left hand. Is she wearing The Ring?

So when I meet Miley Cyrus, I want to congratulate her. Bravo, kid, for surviving so far! All around is the smoking rubble of fellow child stars: Britney the ex-Mouseketeer, in and out of rehab, and drunk-driving Lindsay Lohan. Justin Bieber, a year younger than Miley Cyrus, is struggling with coming of age in the pitiless glare of hyperfame. Then there are Disney contemporaries Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, casting off princess pink to jiggle their boobs in neon bikinis in the movie Spring Breakers.

Meanwhile, what’s Miley up to? She’s doing exactly what she has done since age 13: working damn hard; rushing into the studio at night and emerging in the Los Angeles dawn. She’s recording songs with producer Pharrell Williams, who calls her ‘an old soul’. These tracks, she says, a mix of hip-hop tunes with sweet pop lyrics, have ‘dug deep’ into her emotions, ‘going through things that have hurt so bad in the past year or two. It’s like therapy’.

When she was 15, Donny Osmond – who knows all about the penalties of precocious fame – wrote that Miley ‘will want to change her image, and that change will be met with adversity’. But this fledgling has acquired her adult feathers and, while the drop is still precipitous, there are signs the bird will fly. Besides, sitting over there on the sofa is someone who would never let her fall.

When she arrives in rock-chick boots and ripped jeans, a Pomeranian-Maltese puppy called Bogey in the crook of her arm, everyone assumes Tish (Leticia) is Miley’s friend. She is, in fact, her mother. This blonde Southern belle has always been her daughter’s co-manager and her chaperone. Even today, when Miley is unsure whether an outfit that shows her naked back is too revealing, she calls Tish over to adjudicate: ‘Honey,’ she shakes her head, ‘that’s a little too much.’

Fondling Bogey, Tish tells me a story that explains a lot. Miley was 14, at the height of her TV fame, and wanted to go to a ‘meet and greet’ with fans in a skimpy crop-top. Tish told her to go get changed. Miley refused. A row ensued. Eventually, a surly Miley complied but when she returned, Tish grounded her. It was the night of Kevin Jonas’s birthday. Even though she was dating his brother Nick – and the party was in the very next tour bus at an outdoor concert – Tish wouldn’t let Miley go. ‘I practically had to sit on her all night,’ she says. ‘People ask me how I could do that. But it’s all about values.’

For all its showbiz roots – Miley’s father Billy Ray had a runaway 1992 hit with Achy Breaky Heart – the Cyrus family is now strong and close, despite a brush with divorce in 2011. The house where I meet Miley next day in Toluca Lake, an affluent but not showy suburb of Los Angeles, is her childhood home. She now shares it with her fiance, the Hunger Games hunk whose prolonged absense has brought about a media frenzy. Tish and Billy, plus Miley’s siblings, have moved out, although not very far. If you clambered over Miley’s back wall you would land in their jungle-like garden. Maybe she should install a gate? Miley gives her deep chuckle. ‘That would be too easy, they would come over too much,’ she says.

It is a sprawling villa in Hollywood-Tuscan style, with half a dozen cars, including Miley’s old green Mustang, parked in the long driveway. Inside, the rooms are cavernous. We pass a music room with a grand piano, a filigree iron staircase and a vast table filled with what must be $1,000 of white church candels. Noting they are lit, Miley says, ‘Oh, I see Mom’s been here.’ We move to a smaller room, a den, with two throne-like chairs. On a bookcase are many photographs including a sweet portrait of her and Liam cuddled close.

Today, Miley is dressed down in a hoodie, tight black Balenciaga trousers and Dr Martens boots. A little blonde homegirl. She is also wearing The Ring. And what a ring – a 3.5 carat Art Deco bauble that she says is too big but can’t be adjusted, so she wears it flanked by two heavy circles of diamonds. I wonder her slender finger doesn’t ache. In answer to the ring watchers, she sometimes doesn’t wear it in dodgier parts of LA or on stage – her fans might snatch it off her hand, as they have with other jewellery.

So all is well with the Lord of this Ring? An uncertain look momentarily passes over Miley’s face then she drawls, ‘Everything’s awwwwwl good.’ Liam is promoting a movie in the Philippines and visiting his native Australia. ‘He’s allowed to go back. He doesn’t get to see his parents ever. I visit my relatives in Nashville – I would love to go more but it’s so far…’ Do they text? ‘I’ll call him at 6am and he’ll call me at 2am. We never know the timing.’

I wonder if she ever regrets agreeing to put a ring on it? Wouldn’t it be less pressure just to live together, especially as they are in no hurry to set a date? But clearly Miley aspires to the stability of her long-married parents. She met Liam three years ago, making her movie The Last Song and, far away from his own close family, he was swiftly adopted by the Cyrus clan.

Their engagement last spring seemed a natural progression: ‘We have a house together and dogs. It just seems right to be wearing this ring and to be committed. But we keep our relationship low-key and don’t talk about it anymore.’

Because it only fuels speculation? ‘Exactly. We were too nice to the world and gave them too much insight – into my life and my puppies and my house – and I just don’t feel they get that privilege any more. Like on my Twitter, I’m much more… not conservative, but you don’t see a picture of my family every day now, or of my dogs. You don’t get that personal stuff any more.’

Miley is from a generation of young stars who have grown up with Twitter and Facebook, for whom the barrier between private and public is fluid. She tweets often but, unlike many, has never posted raunchy bedroom shots. She has learned the hard way that revealing even the most innocent detail can explode into a tabloid frenzy. A few times, she has deleted her account – or threatened to – saying that Liam hated it, ‘with good reason’. But when fans – and at one point even her father – beg her to rejoin the social network, she has relented.

Over time, she’s developed rules about how much to reveal. ‘My friend took a picture of her little boy naked pushing his twin sister in the stroller. Cutest thing ever. But I told her to take it off Twitter. You don’t want your naked baby on the internet.’

She warns her 13-year-old sister Noah not to give too much away, too. ‘She says, “I’m talking to my friend” and I’m like, “Are you sure that’s even your friend?” There are so many fake Twitter accounts. I was following a fake of my mom for two months!’ Now, Miley says, she tweets simply to promote her music to fans.

I ask Miley what advice she’d give to the next 13-year-old TV sweetheart. She seems to draw a blank. ‘I don’t know how I got to be so strong,’ she says. ‘I just am. So I don’t know what to tell anyone about steering clear of being a mess-up, or why I can take all that hate that I do and not back down. It’s just something in my body.’

But sitting next to Justin Bieber at his 3D movie premiere, she did give him some advice. ‘I noticed he was taking all these photos of people and doing a lot of s***, and I just grabbed him and said, “Just take a snapshot in your brain of this moment, so you don’t forget.” I don’t remember my Hannah Montana movie premiere – and my 3D movie trumped everyone’s at the box office – I don’t remember being there. All I remember from that night is that I stopped and got a strawberry milkshake beforehand. That’s all. It’s crazy. You think you’re in the present but you’re not.’

A good showbiz fairy blessed this child. Born Destiny Hope, nicknamed Smiley because of her sunny nature and shortened over time, her first memory on the road with Billy Ray, passed from hand to hand on-stage at an Elvis tribute concert. An entertainer is all she has ever wanted to be.

The family moved from Nashville to Toronto when she was 7, where her father had the lead in the TV series Doc. Miley soon had a regular part. At 8, she won a role in the Tim Burton film, Big Fish. At 11, she pestered her parents to audition for Hannah Montana. When she won the main role, Billy Ray sat her down and asked if she really wanted to move to LA. ‘He wasn’t worried about me going crazy – my dad isn’t like that, and my parents trust us and know us. It was more about the heartbreak of work. There’s a lot of stress, and the company is putting in all those millions, depending on a child.’

Sometimes, looking at old photos, she is alarmed for her younger self. ‘I was just a baby! I had no teeth, no boobs. I was a little girl. It’s crazy that a decision you make when you’re a kid can affect your whole life – that someone would trust a child with her own future. It was just lucky that I was able to love it and turn it around.’

Those years are a blur of hard work: up at 6am to shoot Hannah Montana, lessons on set, the world tour, promoting the Hannah album, writing her own material, promoting that too, squeezing in a bunch of movies, meeting her fans.

Between the age of 13 and 18 she barely had an unscheduled second. She played to 80,000 people at the Houston Rodeo three nights in a row. And yet through it all, she didn’t become a diva or a drop-out. Her parents it seems, acted like shock-absorbers: never letting her dwell on the massive corporate expectations resting upon her. And critically for a child star, neither saw her as cash cow nor source of reflected glory.

‘We have always had money and fame,’ says Miley. ‘People who grew up without either can get more of a culture shock and go the wrong way. “Oh my God, I have all this money! How can I spend it? All these people will like me because I’m famous!” I’ve always had people trying to be my friend for the wrong reasons.’ How do you deal with it? ‘I’m used to it. I can smell bulls*** a mile away.’

Even as a teen princess, she was always her outspoken self. ‘Disney were holding their breath, hoping every day that I hadn’t done something that would come out.’ She either never did – or was sensible enough to surround herself with people who didn’t tell. She gestures around the room, ‘I am sitting in a mansion paid for by Disney, so I would never say anything bad about them.’

As child stars get older, parents often cling tight, terrified of losing her most precious asset. Hers did not. ‘Your kids go out, mess up, live their lives,’ says Miley. Which she certainly did, getting a reputation for parting hard, hinting a stoner habit with her Bob Marley birthday cake. Then there was the infamous Annie Leibovitz shoot in which, aged 15, she posed, hair ruffled, make-up smudged and naked but for a sheet. There was a media furore that a famous photographer had pressured an underage girl into playing Lolita. Vanity Fair readers were astonished to learn her father was at the shoot: what was he thinking?

But Miley fiercely defends the picture’s innocence, ‘You can’t even look at something that’s just beautiful without going to set. That’s sad.’

For any young female star, sex is both a marketing tool and a trap. After briefly flirting with raunchy music videos, she has learned the limits. On stage, she wears skimpy gear showing her lithe body, but turns down men’s magazine shoots.

‘A star is someone who doesn’t have to take her clothes off to be sexy because you naturally have star power,’ she says. ‘Sex does sell, but you find a way that’s not just showing your tits. I don’t want to be a glorified model. They just walk on stage and it’s all about their clothes – or lack of clothes.’

She adores the Khia track, My Neck, My Back, an explicit proclamation that men should sexually satisfy women for a change. ‘It’s the best song. It’s like, “I’m not going to do all this to you. You please me!” Most music is sexist. I want my music to be like, “Me and my girls are going to get drunk and have a good time.” Not the guys going, “We’re going out to bang a bunch of chicks.”‘

Miley’s PA is a man, and she’s appalled people assume he’s gay because he works for a woman. She’s sick of the lap-dancer look of hair extensions, a ton of make-up, impossible heels. Her off-stage androgynous style is a kick against a too-obvious sexual appeal. ‘I like Jennifer Aniston. Every time I see her, it’s like white T-shirt, no bra, ripped-up Levi’s – that’s so sexy to me and so natural. I try to mix that plain, almost 1990s look with punk.’

I ask if she’s a feminist. ‘For sure!’ she declares. ‘Someone said to me that we wouldn’t see a woman president in the next 50 years. I said, “I don’t think that’s true.” Then they said, “Well, we don’t have time for the president to go crazy once a month with their period.” I said, “Well, we don’t have time for the guy’s testosterone to get all beefed u!” I just got so angry.’

‘This is like a game to a guy, whereas we have a sense as mothers – Mother Nature! – that the world needs to be mothered. When you are sick you want your mom – and that’s what the world needs. The world is sick.’

Her late grandfather, Democratic congressman Ron Cyrus, would be proud: he told Miley she could be anything. And female role models in music don’t get stronger than her godmother Dolly Parton, whom Miley got to know well when she guested on Hannah Montana. ‘One time, I asked, “Dolly, what colour is your natural hair?” She went, “What colour, honey? Oh, I don’t know, I haven’t seen it in 30 years!” I was like, “I love you!” She just doesn’t care. She always wanted to be entertaining, even if it’s taking a little jab at herself.’

Dolly taught her that, on any TV show or movie, you need to befriend the director of photography so he makes sure the lighting is flattering. She also told her to remember she was the luckiest person on set. ‘You’re not dragging lights around, you’re doing all the creative stuff. Dolly said hello to every single person, from the props people to the catering guy. I watched her and that’s how I treat people. No one every said they had a hard time working with me.’

Back home in Nashville, her classmates always popped her showbiz bubble. ‘I’m happy that I got my head put in the toilet when I was 11. I was crying when they did it, but I don’t cry too much about people bullying me now.’ Those mean girls were an excellent preparation, she says, for the online nastiness, the blogs about her adolescent skin with every dimple ringed, the random ‘you fat slut’ cruelty of strangers that she blanks out.

Growing up in a normal town makes her scathing about LA, its temptations and phoniness. ‘This is not reality,’ she says. ‘This isn’t like any other place. Everything is meant to be attractive, from the people on the sidewalks to the f***king gold fire hydrants in Beverly Hills.’ The paparazzi make ordinary life difficult. ‘I feel like Rapunzel,’ she says. ‘Rapunzel with a mohawk!’ So she fills her golden prison with her four rescue dogs, her boyfriend, a home-movie theatre, her siblings, whom she adores: Braison, a model and film-school student, her little sister, Noah who is crazy about horses.

She picks her friends with care. Katy Perry is ‘such a fun person’. And Kelly Osbourne is ‘the best one to have on your side if anything goes down in LA, she knows where I’m not going to get bothered. You never go to Kelly’s and she has whack friends that you’re like, “Who are these people?”‘

On tour, Miley is surrounded by musicians who’ve worked with her since she was 12 years old, plus of course, Team Cyrus. She recalls on her last world tour the whole, massive family staying in a fancy London hotel and Tish going nuts if they ordered room service. ‘A boy of mac ‘n’ cheese is like $40. All five kids were staying. Plus, Liam and my sister’s boyfriend. So it was like… a lot of food,’ she says. ‘But we’re on tour, we’re making good money, like… why would you not order room service? It’s hilarious. That’s my mom to a tee.’

Miley Cyrus, worth $120 million, lets out her sassy broad’s laugh and you suspect, whatever happens in her fickle business, she’ll be just fine.

Having ditched the squeaky-clean image and long blonde hair of her Disney days, Miley Cyrus has spent the past few years acting out and growing up. As she reveals to Pharrell Williams, the producer behind her new hip-hop sound, she’s unapologetically taking control.

Dressed in a midriff-baring vintage tee and Topshop pants, Miley Cyrus is barefoot dancing to her new hip-hop-infused sound at a Burbank, California, recording studio. A few feet away, Pharrell Williams, the megacharming megaproducer who helped to orchestrate this clever, heartfelt sonic breakthrough, leans effortlessly against a console, trading lyrics with the smiley 20-year-old determined to revolutionize her career. They are listening to “#GetItRight,” the possible lead single off her impending, first post-Disney album, and a sure Top 40 diamond with a whistling hook and clever sweetness that partially obscures the frank sexual nature of its lyrics. A global phenomenon since her Hannah Montana days, the daughter of Billy Ray “Achy Breaky” Cyrus is widely recognized for kid-friendly hits and a corporate-approved persona. But after shedding her Disney veneer—genuinely, without the trappings of image strategy—Miley has revealed herself to be a far more compelling pop figure in the throes of a powerful transformation. The world is watching as her look, identity, and womanhood evolve, fixating on every life decision from the engagement to Hollywood heartthrob Liam Hemsworth to the defiant, much-ballyhooed cropped do which she attributes to the ongoing mentorship of Williams. Here the collaborators sit down to discuss everything from fashion to family to triumphant next-level greatness.

Where did you start?

MILEY CYRUS Pharrell was the first person I wanted to work with. I had so many different producers and managers and all of these people coming to my house because I didn’t know where I wanted to start. My record would have come out like a high school mixtape with these different songs and feelings that don’t blend. Then I met Pharrell, and it was the first time I was in the studio just being really free. Pharrell opened that door. At the end of the day, it’s what me and P are making. And of course we’re so grateful for the people that got us here, that brought us to each other, and now we’re on our own path. I’ve never been more thankful for someone in my life. It’s just crazy. It’s been almost a year since we started, and my life has been completely different. I could keep doing this forever, just making this record.

When did you first really connect?

PHARRELL WILLIAMS If you walk in the room I can tell you a lot of things about you. I think people just emote. She started talking and I started realizing. Because I knew the music, but I didn’t know it know it. I kept hearing about this girl Miley who had this song “The Climb.” And then there was the video with her locked in the cage…

MC “Can’t Be Tamed.”

PW I was like, Okay, she wants out. Then there was the whole salvia thing. [turns to Miley’s press representative] And I’m sorry but I just…

MC It’s part of our…

PW That was an integral moment for me. Because it let me know that this was a girl coming from that world who saw, This is cool, I’ll enjoy it, it’s great, but I’m feeling me now, I’m waking up. It was like her hormones were speaking to her in all kinds of ways. When I met her, I just thought of a ball of fire. She was saying, “I like this and I like that.” And I was impressed, because she knew to say those things.

Like what?

PW Just the music she was listening to. Like Waka Flocka Flame.

MC “Dance A$$” [by Big Sean] was my shit at that moment. [laughs]

PW Because “Party in the U.S.A.” was pop as fuck, but it was honestly good pop, and she was saying the right shit. She was like, [singing] “And the Jay-Z song is on!” And I was like, “Okay, the salvia, that line in ‘Party in the U.S.A.,’ and the different shit that would pop up online? There’s definitely something in there.”

MC No one let me sing the way that Pharrell does, which is to just go in and do your shit and do all of the harmonies that you do, which is what brings it to where I’m from. Which is being from Nashville and being around Dolly [Parton, her godmother] and listening to her sing. No one would give me the chance to say, “Turn the Auto-Tune off, turn the filter off, and just listen to what I’m saying.” He was the first person that ever did that. I can never say that I don’t love “Party in the U.S.A.” and that I’m not appreciative of it. It would be like my dad saying that he hated “Achy Breaky.” It’s what gives you everything that you have. I would never take it back. But that’s not who I am, that’s not where I want to sing, that’s not what I want to sing, and that’s not what I want my voice to sound like, because you can’t hear me through there. I like that Rihanna has a tone of her own. Beyoncé has a tone of her own. I have a tone of my own. Everything else is just blending into one club mix—but we keep our 808s in there because I love them.

PW Yes, she does.

MC I was listening to what me and P worked on last night and I had Liam’s little nieces over and they were all dancing to it, and then his brother came in and was like, “Is this the stuff with Pharrell? It’s so dope!” That’s exactly what I wanted to do. Everyone can like what we’re doing. That’s when I feel like my record is so different. It’s not what people expect where it’s me giving my middle finger and saying, “Fuck you. I didn’t make a record for the people that love me.” I made a record for the people that love me, but then I made a record for the people that I want to start to understand me.

What does that sound like?

PW It sounds like her personality. This whole process has just been me holding up the mirror. Let’s move to the hair part of the conversation. We’re down in Miami and she kept saying things like, “Yeah, well, this is what I think, but such and such is going to think such and such.” And I was like, “You’re the queen of your own kingdom. At the end of the day, you need to do what other people can’t do.”

MC It was awesome because we were sitting around with Helen [Lasichanh, Williams’s fiancée] and Rocket [the couple’s son], and I’m like, “Why don’t I just cut my hair, all blonde?” Because I’ve always wanted to do it. I got to pretend to be a Jonas Brother one time and I had to wear a Jonas swoop and as soon as I saw it I was like, Okay, I kind of look dope like that. And I never really thought about it again. And then Pharrell said, “That’s what you can do that no one else can do.” Maybe two weeks later, he was the first person I called as soon as I pulled my bun up and [hairstylist Chris McMillan] went like this [makes snipping motion]. He was the only person I wanted to call, because I wanted him to know that I’m not fucking around with what I’m saying. I’m going to change, I’m going to be different, I’m going to do what I want to do. I chopped my hair and bought a pair of Docs and never looked back.

What did you think when you saw it?

PW I was excited for her, but it wasn’t shocking, because she already was that. My only thing was, Free yourself.

MC In this industry, no one wants to turn a mirror to you and encourage you to see the good things. No one wants you to see yourself fully because then you don’t need them. If there’s nothing missing, then you don’t need them.

PW This is a 20-year-old. Do you hear all of this awareness? I kept saying to her, “Your view of yourself, your view of the world, is so accurate. Start to embrace it now so you can be great when you’re in your 30s. Right now you’re really, really good, and you’re super-advanced, but don’t be one of those girls who had everything you needed at a young age but because you were distracted by all of the peripheral bullshit you burn out at 25 or 30 or whatever. Embrace this power of yours.” It’s been a year, and I’ve seen a complete difference. When I first met her, she had 5.6 or 5.7 million Twitter followers. You look now and she’s at 11.3 or 11.4.

MC That’s right. It’s 11.4 today. You’re on my Twitter too much. [laughs]

PW I watch the growth. It’s like a growth chart. This is very important to me, because this is my little sis. You stick with your own. You’re there for your type. And that’s my type. I feel a responsibility to our relationship and everything that we’ve become. You’re just never going to meet a nicer person that’s this fucking on it.

It reminds me of Janet Jackson’s Control album…

PW Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

An artist coming into her own.

PW Fearless. I’ll never forget when she first cut her hair and a good friend of mine—Tyler, the Creator—made a comment on Twitter.

MC About my barber. He called him my barber!

PW And she fired back!

MC It’s actually funny. He wrote something about how ‘Miley should kill her barber for what he did to her.’ And I was like, “Nothing can match what God already did to your face. By the way, I love your music. Smiley face.”

PW The balls! The ovaries! The sophistication to end it with, “But I love your music. Smiley face”? I was telling people, “Told y’all. She’s different.”

MC And now he’s on a track with us and in here and chilling.

PW “Yes, I will nuke you. I’m not afraid. But I like your music.” That’s the real shit. That was a very proud moment for me. Name another pop artist under 21 who would have responded like that. Because on paper she’s a pop artist. If you cut her open, she’s many things.

MC In my mind I’m Gucci Mane, but on paper I’m a pop artist. [laughs]

I remember seeing you out wearing a Moschino logo belt and knowing that you knew something.

MC That’s what’s crazy. I felt like I always got it. I would always secretly keep my shit for around the house. Now I’m like, Fuck it. It’s not about the girly-girl shit anymore, the pop shit. Times are changing, music is changing, fashion is changing. It’s all changing.

I like that you’re engaged but also no bullshit. You have a certain stability while taking on the world.

MC I work every day. My assistant is always like, “I don’t want to hear you sing during the day unless we’re at the studio, because I’m at the studio with you from 5 pm until 5 am half the time.” And it’s like, I’m not home with my boyfriend all the time. We work. Every week it’s “Are they broken up? Because we don’t see a photo of them.” I don’t have time to go to Starbucks with my boyfriend every morning. I wish I did, but I don’t. I’d rather chill at my house and be there for the time I actually get to spend with him. And then I’m at the studio all day. He gets up to work out at six and I come home at five from the studio. I put this record before everything, and I’ve never done that with anything. I’ve put too much into this record to put anything else in front of it.

Have you two discussed the look of the music?

MC My accountant doesn’t love Pharrell like I do. Because he introduced me to some vintage shit in Miami that’s crazy. I’ve always been different in how I dress, but Pharrell and especially Helen—because when Pharrell would be editing we would just go on the computer and shop—they helped me understand how I could express myself through how I dress.

PW And that’s what you’re seeing and why I can’t take credit. It’s been great to watch her style evolve, because she’s always had that in her. The Comme des Garçons, the Chanels of the world—you can tell a lot of people about that shit, but they may not pick it up right. Whereas with her, it’s like, This speaks to me. Because this is how I feel right now. It’s not like, I’ve got a lot of money! Let me buy everything in the store! With her, it’s an honor to watch it. It’s a privilege. She dives in. What you’re seeing is the manifestation of her personality. It’s just like the music. We played you two songs worlds apart, and with both of them you understand who Miley is.

The album is your story.

MC I got excited because on this record I can say whatever I want. And then I got more comfortable with that and the record got better and better. If I had made it two years ago when I should have had a record come out, it would have been a little brat trying to say “This isn’t who I am! This is what I’m trying to prove!” Now I’m not trying to prove anything to anybody.

We have no shortage of Miley Cyrus pics in our repertoire, but usually they’re self-snapped photos, sometimes taken with a dog (or two or three). And don’t get us wrong: even when dressing up like her dogs, Miley ALWAYS looks like a fox. It’s just that after seeing some outtakes from her Elle UK spread, we are calling DOUBLE BABE ALERT! Not only is Miley stunning and totally ab-tastic, but she’s total marriage material — OR NOT! Well, as far as we’re concerned, the “Fall Down” singer can “Liberty Walk” down the aisle, down her own path, or where she damn well pleases, ’cause even her outtakes are flawless!! (If you’ve successfully twerked a unicorn onesie, then you win at life forever.)

Inside the issue, the “Ashtrays And Heartbreaks” songstress addresses a TON of our burning questions, the most pressing of which of course is her highly publicized (maybe) breakup with Liam Hemsworth. She explained: ”We have a house together and dogs. It just seems right to be wearing this ring and to be committed. But we keep our relationship low-key and don’t talk about it anymore.” Miley also elaborated on why she’s cut back in letting the world into her life: “We were too nice to the world and gave them too much insight — into my life and my puppies and my house — and I just don’t feel they get that privilege anymore. Like on my Twitter, I’m much more . . . not conservative, but you don’t see a picture of my dogs. You don’t get that personal stuff anymore.” UMMMM, not exactly sure if that last part about not posting pics of her dogs is true, but let’s just roll with it. Whatever works for you works for us!

Miley graces the cover of the June issue of ELLE UK, making her debut for the magazine. Check out a first look at her interview below.

On her relationship with Liam Hemsworth: “We have a house together and dogs. It just seems right to be wearing this ring and to be committed. But we keep our relationship low-key and don’t talk about it any more.”

On her public lifestyle: “We were too nice to the world and gave them too much insight — into my life and my puppies and my house — and I just don’t feel they get that privilege any more. Like on my Twitter, I’m much more… not conservative, but you don’t see a picture of my dogs. You don’t get that personal stuff any more.”

On giving Justin Bieber some tough love: “I noticed he was taking all these photos of people and doing a lot of sh*t, and I just grabbed him and said, ‘Just take a snapshot in your brain of this moment, so you don’t forget. I don’t remember my Hannah Montana movie premiere — and my 3D movie trumped everyone’s at the box office — I don’t remember being there. All I remember from that night is that I stopped and got a strawberry milkshake beforehand. That’s all. It’s crazy. You think you’re in the present but you’re not.”

On her time as a child star: “I was just a baby! I had no teeth, no boobs. I was a little girl. It’s crazy that a decision you make when you’re a kid can affect your whole life — that someone would trust a child with her own future. It was just lucky that I was able to love it and turn it around.”

On ideas of beauty and sex: “A star is someone who doesn’t have to take her clothes off to be sexy because you naturally have star power. Sex does sell, but you have to find a way that’s not just showing your tits. I don’t want to be a glorified model. They just walk on stage and it’s all about their clothes – or lack of clothes.”

On her photoshoot with Annie Leibovitz: “You can’t even look at something that’s just beautiful without immediately going to sex. That’s sad.”

The issue is in stores from 1st May! Make sure you get a copy.

Miley Cyrus and Kelly Osbourne starred together in So Undercover, a film that sees Miley play a private-eye hired by the FBI to go undercover at a college sorority to hunt out THE BADDIES. Her character’s a bit of a tomboy, so when she has to pose as a soroity sister she gets into a bit of a flap over shedding her tough-girl image and knuckling down to hair braiding and nail painting.

Turns out, actual real-life Miley was a bit curious about how the whole thing was gonna work out too, and the film’s producers sent her and Kelly Osbourne to a real-life sorority to hang out and ‘observe’, to get a real feel for what it was like to be part of.
